Netiv HaAsara

The Giant Flag at Netiv HaTikva:

    Nir Peres Observation Point:

WavingNetiv HaAsara, the community closest to the Gaza Strip border, is a place where landscape and memory meet at almost every point. At the southern edge of the community stands the “Netiv HaTikva” (The Hope Path) site, established following the events of October 7th. At its center flies a giant Israeli flag, the largest in Israel, measuring 17 by 12 meters, on a flagpole approximately 53 meters high. The flag was placed at the point where the terrorists entered the community, and has become a central part of the memorial site and a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and the continuation of life in this place.

Around the flag, 20 olive trees were planted in memory of the 20 Netiv HaAsara residents murdered on October 7th. Each tree represents a person, and the grove creates a quiet space within the open landscape of the community, directly facing the Gaza Strip.

Adjacent to the flag and olive grove stands the “Netiv LaShalom Wall,” paved with thousands of small stones creating a mosaic of hope: Peace – سلام – שלום. And perhaps one day it will come, I hope soon.

A bit north of there in the community is the Nir Peres Observation Point, established in memory of Lt. Col. Nir Peres, who was head of the Coordination and Liaison Administration for the Gaza Strip. From the observation point, a wide view unfolds along the area, from Ashkelon through Zikim Beach to the Gaza Strip. The panorama connects these two places and the landscape surrounding them: the community, the agriculture, the sea, Ashkelon and the Gaza Strip, with the memory of what happened here and the reality that continues to exist in this place in the background.
