Old Acre
Old Acre is a historical gem set on the Mediterranean coast, filled with stories, legends, and fascinating history. The city, with roots dating back to ancient times, offers visitors an captivating and diverse experience with numerous attractions spanning underground, on the water, and along its ancient walls.
One of the main and most impressive attractions in Old Acre is the underground tunnels excavated by the Templars in the 12th century. These tunnels served the knights as defense and secret passage within the city. A tour through the tunnels provides a sense of time travel, with arched ceilings and ancient stones leading through mysterious passages to different parts of the city.
Old Acre also offers spectacular experiences on the water. The city’s ancient port, which was one of the most important ports in the region during various periods, remains active and provides visitors the opportunity to sail and view the city from a unique perspective. During the sail, one can see the magnificent walls protecting the city, as well as the beautiful Al-Jazzar Mosque and the clock tower of Khan al-Umdan overlooking the sea from a great height. I haven’t yet ascended to the top of either minaret… it’s in the plans.
The walls are one of the most distinctive symbols of Old Acre. A walking route along the walls allows views of the old city from different angles, including views of the narrow streets, colorful markets, and historical buildings. Along parts of the walls, one can find towers and fortresses that were part of the city’s complex defense system. A walk on the old city walls provides a stunning panoramic view of the blue sea on one side and the old city on the other. At Sunset, the sun paints the stone walls in shades of gold and orange, creating a magical scene that attracts both photographers and romantics alike.
Walking through the narrow alleys of the old city is like a journey through time. The air is filled with the scent of spices, while merchants call out to sell their wares. Ancient mosques, churches, and restored khans blend in harmony, telling the story of a city that was a crossroads of cultures and religions.
Old Acre is a city that wonderfully combines past and present. Its many attractions, below ground, on the water, and on the walls, make it a fascinating destination for any enthusiast of history, culture, and adventure.
