The Western Wall, Jerusalem

Initially, I chose to photograph the Wall from a high and inconspicuous location, so as not to disturb anyone. It was important for me to capture the view from a wide angle to show the vibrant space on one hand, and the quiet and hidden areas where excavation work is taking place on the other. Precisely because of the distance and height, a panorama is obtained that highlights this contrast in a fascinating way. Many people, both worshipers and tourists, wander around the Western Wall plaza without paying any attention to the activity taking place right behind them. This is an area that is so well hidden that it has almost completely disappeared from sight.

I took the central panorama after two years, on a day that happened to be the Fast of Esther. I arrived in Jerusalem following a special invitation, and took the opportunity to visit and photograph the Mahane Yehuda market on the same tour. This time, I photographed from within the Western Wall plaza itself. After connecting the images, I was surprised to discover how strong the result was, even though it consists of only six images. It is important for me to mention – there is no use of Photoshop here. The amazing shine of the Wall comes directly from the lighting conditions at that moment, the sun that was just before Sunset, along with the impressive clouds that created the ideal scenery. Perhaps there was some small intervention from above, something that enhances the special magic of the situation.  In the end, I placed a note in the Wall, one wish, and I will not reveal here what it was. I will only say that if this wish comes true – everyone will know.
